Formal observation of lessons

- By the Professional Tutor at the Placement School
- By the Lead Subject Mentor on one occasion during each school experience period
- By the Programme Manager
A trainee may also be observed:
- By a subject tutor from the University of Bedfordshire
- By OFSTED
- By the external examiner during the second placement
Teacher Trainee Progress in school placements will be monitored closely by the school based tutor. Any indication of under performance will result in the following support measures being put into place. The trainee teacher should be informed by the placement school of any causes for concern, as they arise, in connection with his/her performance as a teacher.
- trainee will be given specific targets for improvement
- trainee will have timelines for meeting these targets
- trainee will have support from professional tutor in placement school
- all targets and discussions should be written down
TRACKING OF POTENTIALLY NON-COMPLIANT
An Action Plan will be devised by the Programme Manager and appropriate Lead Subject Mentor (see also Code of Practice, Fitness to Teach and Competency Procedure)
- Professional tutor alerts programme manager
- Programme manager meets trainee
- Programme Manager / external subject trainer observes lessons
- Further system of target setting and timelines – action plan set up by Programme Manager and Lead
Subject Mentor
- Programme Manager checks file
- Partnership alerts Principal Officer, University of Bedfordshire and external examiner
In respect of misconduct normal conduct procedures will apply.
School based tutors will be responsible for reviewing and recording the progress of each trainee against the standards for QTS. Professional Tutors will oversee this process and support the development of the school based tutor’s competence in making judgements.
Assessment through direct observation of lessons will be made using a single set of criteria established by the Partnership Team. Trainees will be introduced to, and regularly assessed by means of, a single lesson planning and evidence record form, which will make specific references to the standards for QTS. This form will be used by trainees, and their mentors, as a routine part of planning and teaching.
